Muhammad Barkindo, The Secretary General Of OPEC, Has Died.

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ (OPEC) Secretary-General, Muhammad Barkindo, has passed away.

Mele Kyari, group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, confirmed his death via a Twitter post in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Kyari tweeted:

“We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11pm yesterday 5th July 2022. Certainly a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly,” Kyari tweeted.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had, on Tuesday, honoured Barkindo and praised him as a deserving ambassador for the nation.

Senator Shehu Sani, a former member of the eighth Assembly, tweeted in response to Barkindo’s passing:

“Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo, former GMD NNPC and until recently, @OPECSecretariat scribe, was honoured yesterday. He died 11pm yesternight. May Allah grant him Aljanna firdausi. Amin. That is the ephemerality and transience of life.”

According to Daily Post, Barkindo represented Nigeria on OPEC’s Economic Commission Board from 1993 till 2008.

Barkindo was GMD of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) from 2009 to 2010.
